News

“Winning any graded race by 23 lengths, as CHARGE IT did in the Dwyer, takes an immensely talented horse. Charge It’s ability was at the Grade 1 level.” said trainer Todd Pletcher.

“TDN Rising Star” and top-tier performer, CHARGE IT proved his class and ability when he won the 1-mile Dwyer (G3) contest by an astounding 23 lengths, earning a career-best 111 Beyer Speed Figure. In total, CHARGE IT registered Beyer Speed Figures of 100 or higher on four occasions, including a 106 Beyer in the Suburban Stakes (G2) at a 1 ¼ mile with his 4 ¾-length victory, tying the highest figure of all horses going that distance in 2023. CHARGE IT was also runner up in the Florida Derby (G1) to eventual Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio.

CHARGE IT hails from one of the most prominent and active families.  He is bred on the same cross as Horse of the Year, Flightline, being out of the Indian Charlie mare, I’ll Take Charge, herself a $2.2 million yearling.  Second dam is the multiple Grade 1 winner and 2013 Broodmare of the Year, Take Charge Lady.

CHARGE IT is an exceptional looking horse that possessed brilliance,” added Gainesway General Manager Brian Graves. “His pedigree is among the very best available to breeders.”

Pedigree Analysis for Charge It

A sensational 23 lengths winner of the Dwyer Stakes (G2) while running a 111 Beyer Speedfigure, Charge It is bred on an identical cross to Flightline, and is a grandson of Broodmare of the Take Charge Lady.

The cross of Tapit and sons with mares from the Storm Cat branch of Northern Dancer has been a prolific one with more than nearly 80 stakes winners, 41 graded. This includes Champion Monomoy Girl by a son of Tapit out of a mare by Henny Hughes, who is by Hennessy, himself the broodmare sire of a Tapit grade one winner, and the sire of Johannesburg (sire of Scat Daddy), also broodmare sire of a Tapit line grade one winner. Crosses with mares carrying Johannesburg and Scat Daddy are particularly interesting giving inbreeding to the sisters Preach and Yarn, as found in Triple Crown winner Justify. Tapit line Champions Hansen and British Idiom are out of mares by Storm Cat sons Sir Cat, and Mr. Sekiguchi respectively. Overall there are 15 grade one winners bred on a Tapit/Storm Cat cross, also including from daughters of Forestry (sire of Discreet Cat and Shackleford), Giant’s Causeway (sire of Not This Time, First Samurai, Eskendereya, Creative Cause, Fed Biz, Carpe Diem, Brody’s Cause, Fairbanks and Giant Gizmo), Tabasco Cat, Bluegrass Cat, Yankee Gentleman and Seeking the Dia. There are three graded stakes winners out of mares by Harlan’s Holiday (sire of Into Mischief – himself already broodmare sire of Tapit line grade one winner White Abarrio). There is also a graded winner out of a mare by Menifee, who like Harlan’s Holiday is by Harlan. We can also note Tapit graded winners out of mares by Storm Cat line stallions Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir) and Catienus, and stakes winners out of mares other Storm Cat sons, Stormy Atlantic, Stormin Fever, Bernstein and Pure Prize, and one out of a mare by Forty Tales, a son of Tale of the Cat (sire of Tale of Ekati and Lion Heart, and grandsire of Girvin, Kantharos and Uncaptured).

Another branch of Northern Dancer that has done well under Tapit is that of Deputy Minister. On this cross, grade one winner American Gal is one of four stakes winners by Tapit and sons out of mares by Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again, also sire of Paynter and Oxbow). Tapit and his sons also have also sired graded winners out of mares by Graeme Hall, a son of the Deputy Minister stallion, Dehere (also broodmare sire of a Tapit line stakes winner, and himself sire of the second dam of Charge It) and French Deputy, and stakes winners out of mares by Touch Gold and Posse (by Silver Deputy).

Sadler’s Wells is another branch of Northern Dancer, and on the Tapit cross with that line there are grade one winners out of mares by Galileo (sire of Capo Blanco, Magician and Treasure Beach) and out mares by El Prado and his son, Kitten’s Joy. There are also three graded winners out of mares by El Prado son, Medaglia d’Oro (and stakes winners out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro son, Warrior’s Reward). From the Dixieland Band branch of Northern Dancer, Tapit has a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Dixieland Band himself, and there are four graded stakes winners, one grade one, out of mares by that horse’s son, Dixie Union.

Tapit has enjoyed success with select branches of Mr. Prospector. His champion and classic winner Essential Quality is out of a mare by Elusive Quality (sire of Quality Road as well Great Notion and Omega Code, also broodmare sires of Tapit line stakes winner), a son of Gone West. From other sons of that stallion on the cross with Gone West line mares, we find Tapit grade one winners out of mares by Mr. Greeley and Proud Citizen, and graded stakes winners out of mares Grand Slam (and his son, Limestone), Speightstown (sire of Munnings) and Muqtarib.

There also seems to be Tapit line an affinity for the Forty Niner branch of Mr. Prospector, with grade one winner Constitution out of a daughter of Distorted Humor (sire of Maclean’s Music and Jimmy Creed); grade one winner Dance Card out of a mare by Editor’s Note; and two stakes winners out of mares by Coronado’s Quest.

From a mare by Mr. Prospector son, Carson City, Tapit sired grade one winner Pretty City Dancer, and two other graded stakes winners, suggesting daughters of City Zip. From other From other branches of Mr. Prospector there is a Tapit graded winner out of a mare Smoke Glacken; Tapit line graded winners out of mares by Cape Town and his sire, Seeking the Gold (also sire of Petitionville and Mutakddim); a Tapit line graded stakes winner out of a mare by Curlin, a son of Smart Strike (also sire of Lookin At Lucky and English Channel; two stakes winners out of mares by Roman Ruler, a son of Fusaichi Pegasus; two stakes winners, including 2024 graded stakes winning two-year-old Non Compliant, out of mares by Street Sense; and a stakes winner out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid (giving inbreeding to A.P. Indy and a three-quarters sister).

Tapit is out of a mare by Unbridled, from the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector and there has been some success with the cross back over Fappiano line mares. Tapit is sire of grade one winner Ring Weekend out of a mare by Fappiano line stallion, Cryptoclearance, and a stakes winner by out of a mare by a son of Cryptoclearance, inviting daughters of Crytpoclearance son, Victory Gallop, and grandson Candy Ride (sire of Twirling Candy and Gun Runner).

Crossed back over the Unbridled branch Tapit and sons have sired Champion Unique Bella and five other stakes winners out of mares by Unbridled’s Song, and crossed over mares by sons of Unbridled’s Song has a grade one winner from a daughter of Dunkirk, four stakes winners out of mares by First Defence; and stakes winners out of mares by Eurosilver and Half Ours. Other sons of Unbridled’s Song include Songandaprayer, Even The Score, Rockport Harbor, Old Fashioned, Zensational, Arrogate and Midshipman.

There are eight Tapit line grade one winners by Valiance out of mares by Empire Maker. There is a stakes winner by a Tapit son out of a mare by Empire Maker’s son, Pioneerof the Nile, and he is also sire of Bodemeister, and grandsire of American Pharoah and Cairo Prince. Another Unbridled son to appear as broodmare sire of Tapit stakes winners is Broken Vow, and there is also a Tapit line stakes winner out of a mare by Unbridled grandson Birdstone. It could also pay to consider introducing Fappiano through Rubiano – a three-quarters brother to the dam of Tapit – and Quiet American (grandsire of Midnight Lute).

From the In Reality line, Tapit line stallions have four stakes winners, including classic winner Tapwrit from the Valid Appeal branch through Successful Appeal. The cross of Tapit and sons over mares from the Relaunch branch has produced eight stakes winners, including classic winner Tiz The Law, out of a mares by Tiznow (sire of Gemologist, Colonel John and Tiz Wonderful), and two stakes winners, one graded out of mares by Honour and Glory (sire of Put it Back).
