Making his second start of the year after finishing third on New Year’s Day, SPUN TO RUN’s Spenard visited the winner’s circle for the first time with a 7 ½ length maiden victory.
The Marylou Whitney-bred went off as the co-favorite and pushed the early leader in the six furlong race before taking command around the turn. Once he had the lead, jockey Karlo Lopez didn’t have to do much to convince his mount to pull away.
Racing with his ears pricked, Spenard pulled away under a hand ride for a 7 ½ length victory with only two horses within 10 lengths of him at the line.
Trained by Tena Birdwell for Joe Schumer, Spenard has hit the board in all three starts.
The colt is one of three winners from three to race out of Tweeterdini. That Bernardini mare is out of a three-quarter sister to Grade 2 winner Bird Song and half-sister to Grade 1 winners Birdstone and Bird Town.
There are 21 stakes performers overall under Spendard’s first three dams.
This was the second winner in under a week for the second crop sire, with SPUN TO RUN’s Rayden and Remi winning just two weeks after breaking his maiden late last week.
