It was an impressive debut performance for KARAKONTIE juvenile Off In the Corner on Saturday when the Peter Miller-trained colt won a Del Mar Maiden Special Weight by an easy 2 ¼ lengths.
Kicking off his career in a five furlong turf race, Off In the Corner broke a step slow to give the field a few lengths advantage. It didn’t take him long to make those lengths up down the backstretch with the colt sneaking up the rail around the turn.
In the blink of an eye, he had the lead and opened up multiple lengths going into the stretch. No one gave him a serious challenge with Joel Rosario letting him coast home in the final furlong to that 2 ¼ length win.
Owned by Altamira Racing Stable, the colt was bought earlier this year at OBS April for $100,000 by Miller.
He’s bred by Newstead Stables out of More Than Ready daughter Sally Dangles. That mare is already the dam of a stakes placed runner from her first three to race with Killjoy leading the mare’s three winners.
Sally Dangles is a full sister to the Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Consumer Credit and out of the Group 2 winning Sally Bowles. That mare also produced Grade 3 winner Lady Radler and stakes placed London Citizen.
The extended family includes Group 1 winner Morisco.
This was the second big winner of the day for KARAKONTIE, who saw daughter Roja win the Andy Guest S. at Colonial Downs as well with son None Above The Law finishing third in the California Dreamin’ S later on the Del Mar card.
