GAINESWAY Stallion Barn Well Represented at Breeders’ Cup

MCKINZIE has been off to a stellar start at stud and that is reflected in the Breeders’ Cup entries, where he has three runners from his first crop entered.

Going off at 3:25PM Pacific Time on Friday, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) features two MCKINZIE entries who helped make October the month of MCKINZIE. Breaking from the widest gate here, Scottish Lassie made a splash on October 5 when the Jorge Abreu trainee broke her maiden in the Frizette S. (G1) with a nine-length romp. It was her second start after a third-place debut at Saratoga.

One day before Scottish Lassie’s victory, MCKINZIE’s daughter Quickick was the first of his four Grade 1 entries that weekend – all four finishing in the top three. The filly didn’t disappoint, finishing second by 1 ¼ lengths to become the third Grade 1 performer from his first crop after Chancer McPatrick’s Hopeful (G1) victory and McKinzie Street’s second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) one day before Scottish Lassie became his fourth.

Chancer McPatrick is the leader for Eclipse 2-Year-Old Colt honors going into this week and he’ll look to secure that title at 4:45PM PT in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1).

Also breaking from the widest gate in his race, Chancer McPatrick has been perfect in his three starts this year. The colt broke his maiden at Saratoga in July before trainer Chad Brown brought him back in the Hopeful S. (G1). That race saw him become the first Grade 1 winner for MCKINZIE, while the Champagne S. (G1) solidified his place in the division. In that start, Chancer McPatrick not only won by 2 ¾ lengths, but also beat the third placed runner by 7 ½ lengths.

Those three runners are joined by three others entered around the country this weekend with the group away from Del Mar including Armed Forces S. entrant Super Sailor – a race SPUN TO RUN’s God With Us is also entered in.

TAPIT has sired seven Breeders’ Cup winners with the last coming in 2022 when Flightline romped in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). This year he has four at the meet in a variety of races.

Future Gainesway stallion TAPIT TRICE is looking to give him another Classic winner at 2:41PM PT on Saturday. In addition to being by TAPIT, the colt was bred and sold by Gainesway and is raced by the farm in partnership with Whisper Hill Farm.

A Grade 1 winner last year at three, TAPIT TRICE has two wins in his three starts this year with both coming at the graded stakes level. He kicked off his season in the Monmouth Cup (G3) in July and showed he is just as talented as ever with a 5 ¼ length romp. Two starts later, he added a first Grade 2 win to his record with a victory in the Woodward S. (G2). Only Skippylongstocking was able to get close to him in that start with TAPIT TRICE winning by three quarters of a length and the third placed runner 14 lengths behind him.

TAPIT TRICE is joined in the Classic by Arthur’s Ride, who is also a formidable force here. That TAPIT son has put together a solid 2024 campaign as well with three wins in five starts. His campaign has been headlined by an all-the-way victory in the Whitney S. (G1), where he burst onto the Older Dirt Horse scene with a 2 ¼ length win that showed he’s one to watch for TAPIT.

On Friday, TAPIT sees his filly May Day Ready try to stay undefeated in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).

The filly has handled every step up in class perfectly with a debut Maiden Special Weight victory leading into a win in the Listed Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies S. She made her graded stakes debut in early October and proved she’s a filly to be taken seriously when she showed that TAPIT determination to win by a nose in the Jessamine S. (G1).

Another TAPIT daughter runs on Saturday when Scylla lines up in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) at 12:00PM.

One of two TAPIT stakes winners out of champion Close Hatches this year, the filly has wins in the Fleur de Lis S. (G2) and Shawnee S. (G3) to her name. She looks to break a two-race Grade 1 bridesmaid streak at the Breeders’ Cup with runner up finishes in the Ballerina H. (G1) at Saratoga and in the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) on the same track she’ll run over on Saturday. In that Ballerina second, she helped TAPIT register a unique exacta with the winning Society out of his daughter Etiquette. That mare also runs in this race.

Quickly becoming just as impactful a broodmare sire as a racehorse sire, TAPIT is the broodmare sire of four different Breeders’ Cup runners on Saturday.

The stallion barn will also be represented by future Gainesway stallion MUTH in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) to conclude the Breeders’ Cup.

An exceptional runners at both 2 and 3, this year’s Arkansas Derby (G1) winner is looking to avenge a runner-up finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last year. MUTH has won three of his four starts this year with wins in the San Vicente S. (G2) and the Shared Belief S. in addition to the Arkansas Derby.  That follows a juvenile campaign that saw the colt win the American Pharoah S. (G1) last season with seconds in the Best Pal S. (G3) and Juvenile.

He is joined by future Gainesway stallion and Preakness S. (G1) winner Seize The Grey in the race.

That colt comes in here after a victory in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). Seize The Grey has made a serious bid for Champion 3-Year-Old Colt honors with a win in the Pat Day Mile (G1) joining his pair of Grade 1 wins. In all, he has won four times and finished third one other time in eight starts this year.
