Stone Carver (BIRDSTONE) got up to win the 65th running of the Journal Handicap (Black Type) at Century Mile over the weekend for his second stakes victory.
The 5-year-old son of Gainesway’s BIRDSTONE broke alertly from the gate, remained in striking position, then took things over at the quarter-pole with light handling from jockey Rigo Sarmiento to win by open lengths. Stone Carver completed the 6F on dirt in a final time of 1:08.96.
Bred in KY by T/C Stable, LLC, Stone Carver is out of the mare Vermilion Sea (Boundary). He was purchased by Riversedge Racing at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $35,000.
