WHITE ABARRIO has been retired from racing and will join Gainesway’s stallion roster in 2027.
The $8.5 million earner ran his final race Aug. 8 for the Cornetts and co-owners Gary Barber and La Milagrosa Stable when finishing seventh and last in the Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course. He won the Whitney in 2023, defeating among others that year’s eventual Horse of the Year and champion older dirt male Cody’s Wish.
A fan favorite because of his competitive spirit, striking near-white coloring, not to mention his sidekick, companion goat Brownie, White Abarrio retires with a record of 11-3-3 in 28 starts. Besides winning the Whitney, WHITE ABARRIO‘s other grade 1 wins came in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park, 2025 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park, and the 2022 Florida Derby (G1).
In 2024, WHITE ABARRIO raced four times this year, including a win in the April 18 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and a runner-up finish in the Pegasus World Cup (G1).
Spendthrift Farm bred WHITE ABARRIO out of the Into Mischief mare Catching Diamonds, who is a half sister to multiple group winner Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy) and stakes-placed winner and stakes producer Appeal to the Win. WHITE ABARRIO‘s second dam is the winning Grand Slam daughter Grand Breeze, who is a half sister to Afleet Lass, who is the dam of graded-placed stakes winner Honor the Fleet. Grand Breeze also is the granddam of grade 1-placed, graded stakes winner Mutasaabeq.
