TAPWRIT’s first yearlings make their summer sales ring debut on July 13 when nine represent the Belmont Stakes (G1) winner at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale.
TAPWRIT is one of only three current sires who were juvenile stakes winners and went on to win a traditional distance Belmont Stakes in the last 15 years, alongside Union Rags and American Pharoah.
He is also the only TAPIT son standing in Kentucky out of a Grade 1 winner.
“I think what separates TAPWRIT from many other sons of TAPIT is that he has that Grade I form on the bottom side,” Gainesway’s Sean Tugel told Thoroughbred Daily News. “His dam, Appealing Zophie, was a Grade 1-winning 2-year-old. That gave him the precocity to run not only at Saratoga as a 2-year-old, but break his maiden and be a stakes winner.”

The first TAPWRIT through the ring starts the show early as Hip 2 from the Four Star Sales consignment. Bred by Chad Frederick and Phoenix Farm and Racing, the colt out of Curlin mare Black Coronas is a half-brother to ANCHOR DOWN’s Drop Anchor. Black Coronas is a daughter of stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Tres Coronas, who is also the dam of stakes placed True Vindication.
A strong family through the generations, there are 16 stakes performers under Hip 2’s first three dams.
“He’s been a big, strong colt from the time he hit the ground,” Denise Belcher told Thoroughbred Daily News of Hip 2. “He precocious, good-minded, has a good walk and a great physical. We think he’s going to appeal to the end users and the pinhookers.”
From the family of Grade 1 winners Include Me Out and Check The Label, Hip 14 is offered by Gainesway on behalf of Bridlewood Farm. The bay filly is a half-sister to Mona Stella, who has won two of her three starts and finished second in her only loss. Their dam Divine Trick is out of stakes winner On The Menu, who is a half-sister to the above two Grade 1 winners among her dam’s seven winners overall.
Out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner So Many Ways comes the Eaton Sales-consigned Hip 57. The colt is out of two-time winner Oh Kay See and was bred by Cloyce C. Clark Jr. Out of a young mare, three of Hip 57’s first four dams are stakes producers with his third dam both a Grade 3 winner and Grade 2-placed mare who is the dam of a Grade 3-placed filly with multiple daughters producing graded stakes winners.
Gainesway-offered Hip 80 was the most expensive TAPWRIT weanling last year when bringing $100,000 and he returns to the sales ring in July. Another offered by Gainesway, the colt is a half-brother to two runners. One of those is a winner while the other has finished second in both her starts.
Their winning Smart Strike dam Smart N Soft is out of Grade 2 winner Softly, who is one of three stakes performers for stakes-placed Coragil. Also under Coragil’s name is Grade 2-winning TAPIT son Conquest Big E and stakes winners Bet She Wins and Aquapazza among others.
Smart Strike daughters have proven to be a strong cross with TAPIT sons. Seven of the 28 runners bred on the cross are stakes performers with stakes winner and multiple Grade 2-placed All Out Blitz leading the charge. Four of the seven have placed at the graded stakes level.
“I think the weanling sales really helped him gain some traction as a third-year horse,” Tugel said of the weanling group Hip 80 led. “When a stallion’s initial crop can get the attention of both pinhookers and the breeders, it’s a great storm to maintain really good support for a horse early on in his career. By producing the physicals and replicating his outstanding looks, we’re very excited to bring his first crop of yearlings to the sales this year… we are chomping at the bit to let the public see them.”
Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services sends out TAPWRIT’s daughter out of an Uncle Mo half-sister to four-time Grade 1 winner Tiz The Law, who is also by a TAPIT son. That filly goes through the ring as Hip 90 and is a half-sister to ANCHOR DOWN’s winning Tesoro.
Strong runners are found throughout this Newtownanner Stud Farm-bred’s family, boding well for her success on the track. The filly’s three-time winning dam Tizn’tshebeautiful is out of Grade 2 winner Tizfiz, who is a full sister to Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Fury Kapcori with Horse of the Year Favorite Trick also in the extended family. TAPIT sons have already proved to be successful with Uncle Mo daughters with four winners from six runners, led by stakes winner Always’s Comerio.
Closely related to TAPIT’s champion son Hansen and that one’s Grade 1-placed full sister Anonymity is Hip 93 from Baccari Bloodstock. A $75,000 weanling purchase at Keeneland November, the gray filly was bred by Thomas and Renee Scucci and is out of Hansen’s half-sister Wake Me Up.
Wake Me Up already is the dam of two winners from two to race with her first foal winning three starts and her second – a three-quarter sibling to this filly – winning last year at two.
The Narola-bred TAPWRIT daughter out of winner As Rulers Go is offered as Hip 102 by Taylor Made Sales Agency. A young mare, As Rulers Go is a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Switch and stakes winner Keystone Gulch, who is the dam of Grade 2-placed Top Ravine and Grade 3-placed Celtic Beauty. Another of As Ruler’s Go’s half-sisters is the dam of stakes winner Jo Jo Air.
Their Grade 3 winning dam Antoniette is one of three stakes horses for her own dam with three of her half-sisters also being stakes producers, or dams of stakes producers.
Hip 257 offers another interesting cross for the young sire. Being out of a Blame blacktype granddaughter of Pretty ‘n Smart, makes this colt closely related to Santa Anita Gold Cup (G1) winner Cupid, who is a son of TAPWRIT‘s sire TAPIT. Also on his page is the graded stakes-winning, graded stakes producer Heart Ashley, who is represented by Japanese millionaire Fiano Romano. Hip 257 is consigned by Warrendale Sales.
The last TAPWRIT through the ring is a filly named Summer Tappin Time bred by Yvette and Richard Wira as Hip 300. The Wynnstay Sales-consigned filly is a half-sister to stakes placed Into Summer and Wyfire with their multiple winning dam producing six winners from six to race.
That dam, named Summertime, is also a full sister to Grade 2 winner, $900,000 earner Summer Wind Dancer, who produced Empire Maker’s Grade 2-placed Bahama Bound. Two of Summer Wind Dancer’s daughters also produced stakes placed Bahama Halo and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) third Voting Country. Another of Summetime’s half-sisters is the dam of stakes winner Pass The Buck.
Fasig-Tipton’s one session July Yearling Sale starts at 10:00 a.m. ET on July 13.
