Next week’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale gives buyers their latest opportunity to buy yearlings from the first crop of Belmont Stakes (G1) winner TAPWRIT with two on offer over the two day sale beginning on Monday

The first through the ring comes from Woods Edge Farm as Hip 185 half way through Monday’s session. Bred by Newbyth Stud, the February-born colt is the second foal out of Spanish Star. Classic races are calling this colt’s name with Spanish Star a half-sister to 2019 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston. She is also out of the Grade 3 winning and Grade 1-placed AFLEET ALEX mare La Gran Bailadora, who is one of three stakes horses for stakes winner Affirmed Dancer.
Blacktype runs throughout this family with the colt’s fourth dam multiple Canadian champion Woolloomooloo.
Early on Day 2, TAPWRIT’s yearling filly Candy O enters the ring as Hip 352 for owner Maccabee Farm. A half-sister to 3-year-old Flying Black, who is placed in two starts since the catalog was released, this is another page full of blacktype.
Candy O’s dam Candystand is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Truth And Justice and Grade 3-placed Mr Hall’s Opus with their dam the stakes winning Expelled mare Sala de Oro. Sala de Oro herself is one of three stakes winners and four stakes performers overall for stakes winner Kildare, who herself is one of four stakes horses for the unraced Tara’s Hall.
In all, Candy O has 13 stakes horses listed under her first four dams with eight of those being stakes winners.
TAPWRIT’s final offering of the sale is the regally-bred Hip 511, a granddaughter of Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) winner Desert Stormer offered by Ballysax Bloodstock. The first foal out of Kohili after that mare was imported from Australia to the United States in 2018, the filly has seen a few updates to her page thanks to Kohili’s Grade 2-winning half-sister Sahara Gold.
Sahara Gold’s stakes-placed TAPIT grandson Tapwood broke his his maiden on New Year’s Day and great-grandson Black Ops won an allowance and finished third in the Luke Kruytbosch in January. The most exciting update under the filly’s second dam, however, may have been the 8 ½ length romp on debut by Prevalence at Gulfstream late last month to spring him into Kentucky Derby talks. An already strong page that includes Grade 1 form throughout, the filly’s family will only continue to improve in coming months.
For buyers who would rather buy a mare in foal to TAPWRIT, Hip 66 is the only mare with that distinction in the catalogue. Offered by Gainesway, the two-time winning City Zip daughter Pattitude is the dam of KARAKONITE’s multiple placed daughter Karalinka and also has a yearling colt by Tapwrit from her first three foals. Bred on a March 13 cover, Pattitude is also a half-sister to Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Scherzinger, the dam of Grade 2 winner Kitten’s Roar, and the dam of multiple stakes-placed Awesome Gerry.
A $1.2 million yearling himself, TAPWRIT has seen his first crop sell for up to 10-times his stud fee. The two-day Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale kicks off at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 8.
