Toaster Impressive On Debut for MCKINZIE

It was another eye-catching runner for MCKINZIE on Friday when Toaster won a Los Alamitos Maiden Special Weight on debut.

A $525,000 juvenile purchase at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale earlier this year, the Bob Baffert trainee went off as the heavy favorite in the 6 ½ furlong dirt race.

Breaking from an outside gate, she quickly made her way to the front where she was headed by another runner early. She closely attended that one and was head-to-head with the other filly in the turn. At the top of the stretch, Toaster had the lead. She did just enough in the stretch for an easy 1 ¼ length victory with Juan Hernandez looking over his shoulder in the stretch to make sure they had a safe margin.

The filly races for William Strauss and Sarah Kelly and was a $247,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling from the Gainesway consignment before re-selling in May.

Bred by Whisper Hill Farm, Toaster is a half-sister to the 12 time winner Ice Blast. Their dam Paulownia is out of the successful broodmare Misty Dancer. That mare produced stakes winner Quiet Dance, who is a bluehen mare as the dam of Horse of the Year Saint Liam, Grade 1 winner Funtastic and Grade 2 winner Quiet Giant among her five stakes winners.

Quiet Giant produced Horse of the Year Gun Runner while two other Misty Dancer daughters produced Grade 1 winners Buster’s Ready and Rolling Fog and a third produced Grade 3 winner and Grade 1 placed Lull.

MCKINZIE’s second crop includes 20 winners with four stakes performers, led by the stakes winning Tessellate.
