Tapizar homebred fourth winner for freshman sire

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Zartera impresses at Churchill Downs

Freshman sire Tapizar now has four maiden special weight winners

Zartera strolled to a two-length win in his debut June 16 at Churchill Downs as the 2-year-old Tapizar colt became the fourth winner for his sire, tying him for the most by any freshman sire in North America.

Bred and owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, who also campaigned Tapizar, Zartera came out of the gate very quickly, establishing a lead he would never relinquish and finishing the 4½ furlongs in a quick :51.01 (VIDEO).

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Zartera is out of the multiple stakes-placed Gone West mare Catera, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Cuvee and True North S. (G2) winner Will He Shine.

Tapizar’s four winners have all come in maiden special weight contests, including two at Churchill Downs and one at Gulfstream Park.
