Tapizar colt storms to second victory in Japan

Kentucky-bred Tapizo likely to make stakes debut next

Tapizo, a 3-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Tapizar, racked up his second career victory Oct. 8 when he defeated older horses over 1,800 meters at Kyoto.

Breaking sharply from post 2 with jockey Yasunari Iwata in the irons, Tapizo took command soon after the start and never relinquished the lead, scoring by 2 lengths as the 2.40-1 favorite. The gray or roan colt increased his career earnings to $138,730.

After the win, trainer Yasuo Tomomichi indicated Tapizo would likely move up to stakes company in his next start.

Bred by Mike G. Rutherford from the Bernardini mare Refugio, Tapizo was a $100,000 purchase by owner Ryoichi Ohtsuka from Legacy Bloodstock’s consignment at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.
