It was a third straight career victory and first stakes victory for TAPIT’s Speedometer on Friday night when the 3-year-old won the Goldfinch Stakes for owner-breeder Winchell Thoroughbreds.
The filly bolted out of the gate as soon as it opened in the six furlong race and took control of the pace. She had to withstand pressure early on but shook that one off halfway through the race to grab a quick breather.
The TAPIT daughter was clear coming into the stretch but in the end had to show another spurt to win by a neck over Mystique Saboteur with the rest of the field 6 ¼ lengths behind the duo.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, the filly has jumped to another level of racing in 2022 after breaking her maiden in late January. She followed that up by a 6 ¾ length drumming of the competition in an Allowance Optional Claiming race before earning her first stakes victory.
She is the 153rd stakes winner for TAPIT, who leads all North American sires in every stakes-related category on the Thoroughbred Daily News Sire list.
Speedometer is out of the multiple stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Speedinthruthecity, who is also the dam of TAPIT’s multiple stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Nitrous and his winning Speed on Tap.
Speedinthruthecity had a TAPIT filly for the Winchells last year and returned to him for her 2022 foal.
