Multiple G1 Winner and Record-Setter
LOCKED is a Graded Stakes Winner from ages 2 to 4. He retired with earnings of over $1.9 million having won or placed in 10 of 11 starts.
LOCKED was the top Beyer Speed Figure of 2YO colts breaking their maidens at Saratoga on Dirt since 2015. Broke his maiden by 7 1/4 lengths with a Beyer Speed Figure of 96, earning him a TDN Rising Star.
At 2, LOCKED won the Breeders’ Futurity (G1).
For LOCKED’S 3YO debut, he won a 7f. Allowance by 7 1/2 lengths in 1:21.02 and then went on to win the Cigar Mile, defeating older G1 Winners Book’em Danno and Mullikin.
At 4, LOCKED won the Santa Anita H. (G1) by a record-setting 8 1/2 lengths! It was the largest margin of victory in the 90-year race history. He came out with a 109 Beyer, 3″ Rag, and -5 Thoro-Graph.
“From the time LOCKED entered our program, he asserted himself as a leader of his generation. From ages 2 to 4 and distances of 7f to 10f, he exhibited brilliance from Coast to Coast. A very exciting stallion prospect.” – Trainer Todd Pletcher

A multiple graded stakes winner of almost $2,000,000, Locked’s victories include the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at two and a record-breaking win in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) at four. One of the most talented sons of Gun Runner, he’s out of a half-sister to multiple grade one winner Gabby’s Golden Gal.
Locked is out of a mare by Malibu Moon, an A.P. Indy/Mr. Prospector cross and doubling up on this cross should work well. Tapit – a son of the A.P. Indy/Mr. Prospector cross, Pulpit – has already provided Gun Runner with nine stakes winners, including grade one winner Society and graded stakes winners Wicked Halo, Red Route One, Disarm, Recharge and Il Miracolo. In addition to Tapit himself, Tapit might also be introduced through Constitution, Frosted, Cupid, Tonalist, Trappe Shot, Tapiture and Tapizar.
Tapit is by Pulpit, and stakes winner Optionality is by Gun Runner out of a mare by Pulpit, and there is also a Candy Ride grade one winner out of a mare by Pulpit son, Stroll. Gun Runner has a stakes-placed horse out of a mare by Pulpit son, Sky Mesa and Pulpit is also sire of Flashback and Mr. Speaker.
This also suggests mares by similarly-bred A.P. Indy sons, such as Flatter, the broodmare sire of Gun Runner’s triple grade one winner, Taiba, and Congrats (a brother to Flatter), as well as Mineshaft (sire of Dialed In and Discreetly Mine). It would also be worth considering mares by A.P. Indy son Bernardini (bred very similarly to Tapit) the broodmare sire of Gun Runner grade one winner Life Talk, and Bernardini sons Take Charge Indy and Stay Thirsty, as well as Jump Start and Majestic Warrior.
Gun Runner is out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway, a son of Storm Cat, and one of the most successful patterns for Gun Runner has been inbreeding to Storm Cat, which appears in 14 of his stakes winners. Looking at those out of Storm Cat line mares we can note Champion Echo Zulu is out of a mare by Menifee, a son of Harlan, also sire of Harlan’s Holiday (broodmare sire of Gun Runner grade one winner Vahva, and himself sire of Into Mischief, Majesticperfection – himself broodmare sire of a Gun Runner stakes winner – and Shanghai Bobby).
Gun Runner has grade one winner Gunite out of a mare by Cowboy Cal, a son of his own broodmare sire, Giant’s Causeway and graded stakes winner Hall of Fame out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway himself. Giant’s Causeway son, Eskendereya, is broodmare sire of a graded stakes winner by Gun Runner’s sire, Candy Ride, and one could also look to daughters of First Samurai, Creative Cause and Not This Time.
Gun Runner’s multiple graded stakes-winning and grade one-placed Pappascat is out of a mare by Scat Daddy, sire of Justify and Flameaway. Scat Daddy is by Johannesburg, a son of Hennessy, also sire of Henny Hughes, the broodmare sire of a Candy Ride line stakes winner.
Candy Ride and sons have enjoyed exceptional success with mares by Forest Wildcat, and there is also a stakes winner by a son of Candy Ride out of a mare by D’Wildcat, a son of Forest Wildcat. There are two graded winners by Candy Ride out of mares by Storm Cat son Forestry, who could be introduced through daughters of Shackleford or Discreet Cat. Other likely Storm Cat sources that are already proven under Candy Ride include Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart and Tale of Ekati; grandsire of Kantharos and Girvin), Stormy Atlantic and Yankee Gentleman.
Gun Runner is inbred to Fappiano, a pattern that has worked very well for Candy Ride and his sons. Candy Ride line stallions have enjoyed tremendous success crossed over Fappiano line mares, particularly through Unbridled. Out of mares by Empire Maker (sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister; grandsire of American Pharoah, Classic Empire and Cairo Prince) there are two grade one winners, as well as a stakes winner by Gun Runner. There are five graded winners, including grade one winners Gift Box and Leofric, by Candy Ride line stallions out of mares by Unbridled’s Song. Out of mares by sons of Unbridled’s Song, grade one winner Brant is by Gun Runner out of a mare by Liam’s Map, and there is a grade one winner out of a mare by First Defence, a graded winner out of mare by Songandprayer, and stakes winners out of mares by Political Force, Old Fashioned and Rockport Harbor. Other sources of Unbridled’s Song include Arrogate, Cross Traffic, Midshipman, Half Ours, Zensational, Even The Score, Dunkirk and Buddha.
Unbridled could also be brought in through Broken Vow. We also find Candy Ride grade one winner Finley’sluckycharm out of a mare by Victory Gallop from this line, and it could also be worth considering introducing Fappiano through Midnight Lute (broodmare sire of a Candy Ride line stakes winner), and Rubiano, sire of Burning Roma and Too Much Bling.
Fappiano is a Mr. Prospector line stallion and from the Distorted Humor branch of Mr. Prospector, Gun Runner has graded stakes winner Intricate out of a mare by Distorted Humor himself and multiple grade one winner Cyberknife from a mare by Distorted Humor son Flower Alley, suggesting daughters of Maclean’s Music, Jimmy Creed, Alternation, Brethren and Khozan. From the Gone West branch of Mr. Prospector, Gun Runner has graded stakes winner, Gun Song out of a mare by Mr. Greeley. Candy Ride has grade one winner Vekoma out of a mare by Gone West son Speightstown (sire of Munnings). There is a Gun Runner stakes winner out of a mare by Quality Road (by the Gone West stallion Elusive Quality, also sire of Smarty Jones), Grand Slam and Proud Citizen. From another branch of Mr. Prospector, Gun Runner’s grade one winner Gun Pilot is out of a mare by Smart Strike, sire of Curlin (broodmare sire of a Gun Runner stakes winner), Lookin At Lucky and English Channel, and stakes winner Candy Aisle is out of a mare by Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss). Mr. Prospector is by Raise a Native and from another branch of that line, Gun Runner has Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly (G1) winner Super Corredora out of a mare by Super Saver.
From the Caro line, Candy Ride did very well with mares by In Excess, and he also has a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s grandson, Uncle Mo, a son of Indian Charlie. Gun Runner has stakes winner Concept out of mare by Cindago (also by Indian Charlie) and graded stakes winner Chatalas out of a mare by Indian Charlie. Uncle Mo can be brought in through Laoban, Nyquist and Outwork.
Gun Runner has Preakness Stakes winner Early Voting out of a mare by Tiznow. In addition to mares by Tiznow himself, it would be possible to consider mares by his sons, Tiz Wonderful (bred on a similar cross to the dam of Early Voting), Colonel John, Gemologist, Morning Line and Strong Mandate. Tiznow is a Relaunch line stallion, and Gun Runner also has graded winner Mercante out of a mare by Honour and Glory (sire of Put It Back) from that same line.
We can also note graded stakes winner Sixtythreecaliber out of a mare by Include (by Broad Brush).
