Southern Girl sparkles in stakes debut

Tapit’s astounding year for his progeny continued on Sept. 10 when the up-and-coming 3-year-old filly Southern Girl captured the $75,000 Shine Again S. at Laurel Park, her fourth win in five starts.

The seven-furlong Shine Again was the first stakes start for Southern Girl, but she proved up to the challenge, rallying from third powerfully in the stretch, coming home a 1 1/4-length winner in 1:24.11 on a fast track.

Southern Girl, owned by Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farms, upped her earnings to $117,940. The filly is a half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man and sold to Porter for $775,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale.
