MCKINZIE’s Scottish Lassie Runs Away with Coaching Club American Oaks (G1)

Filly romps to 15 1/2 length victory.

It was a second Grade 1 victory for MCKINZIE’s talented Scottish Lassie on Saturday at Saratoga when she won the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) by an impressive 15 ½ lengths.

The MCKINZIE daughter broke sharply in the 1 1/8-mile Grade 1 and quickly challenged Immersive before taking over the lead. Scottish Lassie was happy to settle just ahead of that runner with the rest of the field over five lengths behind the pair down the backstretch.

Around the turn, Scottish Lassie proved that she was ready to put in the performance of a lifetime. The filly pulled away from the field to win by a widening 15 ½ lengths with the third placed runner a farther six lengths back.

“She came back to her 2-year-old form, and she showed that she wasn’t a flash in the pan. She showed she is a real filly with a lot of talent. Winning that second Grade 1 is extremely important and she did it today,” said co-owner Parkland Thoroughbreds’ Steve Weston.

“The important thing is that there are a lot of horses that will win that first Grade 1 as a 2-year-old and never develop as 3-year-olds. Everyone says, ‘Well, they are a flash in the pan.’ By winning the second Grade 1, she proved that she is for real. She proved she is one of the best 3-year-old dirt horses in the world, and it was very satisfying.”

Trained by co-owner Jorge Abreu for Sportsmen Stable, Parkland Thoroughbreds, Photos Finish, and Corms Racing Stable, Scottish Lassie also won last year’s Frizette S. (G1) by nine lengths. The filly has finished in the top three in five of six races with her only off-the-board finish coming when fourth just a length behind MCKINZIE’s third placed Quickick in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).

Scottish Lassie is the second runner out of the winning Bodebabe, who is a half-sister to the stakes winning Windmill and stakes placed Ignitis. Her dam is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Visionaire and half-sister to Grade 1 winner Tara’s Tango, who produced TAPIT’s Grade 3 winner Capensis.

In all, Bodebabe’s stakes placed dam is the dam of granddam of eight stakes winners.

MCKINZIE’s three Grade 1 performers this year is the best of all second crop sires with the stallion having four stakes winners and 11 stakes performers overall this year.
