MCKINZIE Yearlings Light Up Ring at Keeneland September

MCKINZIE’s runners are lighting up the track so it was no surprise to see his yearlings in high demand at this year’s Keeneland September Yearling Sale, led by a $650,000 colt.

Purchased by Mahmud Mouni from Hill ‘n’ Dale, the son of Pure Poison was bred by Jackpot Farm as the third out of his dam.

Pure Poison’s first runner became a two-time winner after the catalog was released to provide an important update to the page with that colt a three-quarter brother to the yearling. Pure Poison herself was unraced but is a half-sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Florida Won and stakes placed Grand Journey among the four winners out of three-time winner Grand Portege. That mare is also the granddam of stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Happy Is a Choice and stakes placed Spicy Marg.

Grand Portege is out of Broodmare of the Year Oatsee, whose best runners were three-time Grade 1 winner Shackleford and Grade 1 winner Lady Joanne.

Gainesway was the seller of a $625,000 colt out of Shirocca sold to C2 Racing Stable.

The Areion Thoroughbreds-bred was a $235,000 purchase as a weanling before selling here and is a half-brother to two winners from two to race out of his So You Think dam. That mare is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Roman Turbo and multiple stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Swacadelic. Their dam Swish is a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Shirocco, Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Subiaco, stakes winner and Grade 1 placed Storm Trooper, and stakes winner September Storm among others.

In all, there are 14 stakes performers under his first three dams.

Donato Lanni signed the ticket for a $625,000 MCKINZIE colt on behalf of SF Racing, Starlight, and Madaket sold by Machmer Hall Sales during the third session of the sale.

Bred by Calvin and Shane Crain, the colt is a half-brother to stakes winning Unified Alliance from his dam’s first to race. Star Power is a half-sister to two winners herself and out of a full sister to Grade 1 winner A.P. Adventure and half-sister to stakes winning Platinum. Another half-sister produced stakes winner Tashir and stakes placed Rubiano’s Twin while Grade 2 winner Super Mario is found under the colt’s fourth dam.

Lanni also bought a $450,000 MCKINZIE half-brother to stakes winner She’s So Special from Gainesway for the same connections.

In all, MCKINZIE saw nine yearlings sell during the second book of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale with a $390,556 average and $450,000 median. He saw five of his yearlings sell for $450,000 or more.
