KARAKONTIE’s Kentucky Derby (G1) runner Flying Mohawk registered his second win of the season on Thursday with a Keeneland Allowance victory.
Making his first Keeneland start in this 1 1/16-mile turf race, the 4-year-old stalked the leaders while sitting in third just a few lengths behind the pacesetter. Racing on the rail for much of the running, he switched to the outside around the turn to find himself in the four-path coming into the stretch.
He went even wider during the stretch run but collared the leader as they reached the sixteenth pole. He got his head in front soon after and was able to hold off another runner late to win by a neck for his fourth career victory.
Trained by Whit Beckman for Two Eight Racing, Berry Family Racing, and Kaleta Racing, the John O’Meara bred has earned $416,645 in his 12-race career. His placings also include a second in last year’s Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) to earn his Kentucky Derby spot.
Flying Mohawk is the first foal out of the Twirling Candy mare Bonbons Fleur. That mare is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner and 10-time winner Change of Control and out of the multiple stakes placed America’s Blossom.
Bonbons Fleur also has a 2-year-old KARAKONTIE colt named Mikimotos Bars to come.
