G3 Winning Juvenile Coinage Newest Stakes Winner For TAPIT

Third stakes winner for Tapit in five days

It was a second stakes winner in two days for TAPIT when Coinage took out the With Anticipation Stakes (G3) at Saratoga.

The 2-year-old immediately threw the gauntlet down in the 1 1/16 mile turf race when he was the first out of the gate. Coinage galloped comfortably on the front end under Junior Alvarado and had an uncontested lead for much of the running.

Portfolio Company tried to make a run at the leader with just over a quarter left to run and Coinage responded when Alvarado asked him to put that runner away. It was clear Portfolio Company was no match for Coinage in the final furlong as the TAPIT son galloped to a two length victory with the third place runner 5 ½ lengths back.

“Turning for home, I asked him and he started moving very quick and I said, ‘there’s no way anybody can go by me.’ Going for home from the quarter-pole to the wire, I was pretty confident with what I had at that point,” Alvarado said.

Winning his second race in four starts with a third in the Rick Violette Stakes as well, Coinage is trained by Mark Casse for D. J. Stable and the colt’s co-owners and breeders Chester and Mary Broman.

“I told Mr. Broman and the Greens that this horse was something, and I said that four or five months ago,” said Casse. “We got up here and he won, but never showed the same as what I thought I had seen before. Looking at his pedigree, he’s by TAPIT out of a Medaglia d’Oro mare [Bar of Gold]. I know his mother won on the dirt, but I figured this had to be grass.”

The first foal out of Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Bar of Gold, Coinage was purchased by D. J. Stable for $450,000 from the Sequel New York draft at Keeneland September last year. The Bromans then bought back in to their third generation homebred.

Bar of Gold is out of Grade 3 winner Khancord Kid, who is also the dam of stakes placed runners Land Mine and Homeland. Out of a full sister to Yankee Gentleman, Khancord Kid is also a granddaughter of Grade 1 winner Key Phrase. In addition to Khancord Kid, that mare is also the granddam of Grade 2 winner Half Ours.

TAPIT has sired 12 stakes winners and 30 stakes performers in 2021 with three of his runners winning stakes in the last seven days alone.
