First Foal For Preakness Winner Seize The Grey

"We couldn’t be happier with this mare’s first foal for us. He is strong, correct, and has impressive size"

Gainesway is pleased to announce the arrival of the first reported foal by Classic winner and multiple Grade 1 winner, SEIZE THE GREY.

The bay colt was born on January 17 at Tanya Johnson’s Red Gables Stud. He is out of the stakes-winning mare Dontmesswithjoanne (Pioneerof the Nile), winner of the Red Camelia Stakes. The colt is from the immediate family of Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Just FYI and Grade 1 winners, Stellar Jayne and Starrer.

“We couldn’t be happier with this mare’s first foal for us. He is strong, correct, and has impressive size,” said Tanya Johnson. “Seize The Grey delivered everything we were looking for in this mating, and we are excited to watch his progress.”

Campaigned by MyRacehorse and trained by Hall-of-Famer, D. Wayne Lukas, SEIZE THE GREY went on to become the highest-earning son of Arrogate.

As a juvenile, Seize The Grey broke his maiden at Saratoga, defeating future Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Dornoch. He was then triumphant with a front-running victory in the Pat Day Mile (G2) on the undercard of the Kentucky Derby. From there, Seize The Grey became a dual Grade 1 winner and one of the top three-year-olds of his crop by going wire-to-wire in both the Preakness Stakes (G1) and the Pennsylvania Derby (G1).

SEIZE THE GREY was extremely well received by breeders in his debut season at stud, covering 196 mares – the fifth most of any first crop North American stallion in 2025. He will stand for an advertised fee of $25,000.
