DRAIN THE CLOCK Juveniles Set Ring on Fire at OBS March

DRAIN THE CLOCK’s juveniles impressed during the OBS March 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale Under Tack Show and they carried that momentum into the ring, led by a $1.1 million colt.

Purchased by Pedro Lanz as agent for KAS Stables, the colt was the fifth most expensive horse in the sale.

“I’ve been here since the prep and I’ve noticed (the DRAIN THE CLOCKs) are fast and can sustain speed,” Lanz said. “They are athletes, they are incredible athletes. When you see them, they look sharp. And I think they can go the distance. These horses’ strides are very long and they sustain their speed. I have 3-4 that I like in this sale. This colt is a beautiful physical. If we wanted this horse, we knew we were going to have to fight for him.”

De Meric Sales was the consignor of the New York-bred, who breezed in :9.4 and had sold for $145,000 as a yearling when offered by breeders Saratoga Glen Farm and Dean Purdom was purchased for $145,000. His Freud dam has produced three winners from her five to race, led by her five-time winner Moonachie. Her own stakes placed dam Point Reyes produced five winners led by eight-time winner Violent Point and was one of two stakes performers out of Supreme Order.

This family boasts 15 stakes horses on the page with multiple having Grade 2 placings to their name.

Pedro Lanz and KAS Stables also purchased DRAIN THE CLOCK’s Hip 442 for $700,00 from Top Line Sales.

Breezing in :10.0 last week, the colt bred by Luis Coronado and Oscar Olvera was originally a $175,000 yearling purchase last August. The colt is the first foal for Accelerate mare The Couples Girl, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Run Curtis Run. They are out of the stakes winning My Magic Moment with each of the dams with racing age foals on this page producing stakes winners.

Last week, Hip 508 made headlines for breezing in :9.3 and this week she was again in the spotlight with St. Elias Stable purchased her for $570,000 from Top Line Sales.

“We knew we had a shot at going fast today but you never think you’re going to go :9 3/5. Once the Golden Pal did it, we thought the DRAIN THE CLOCK might do it because she’s been right there head and head with him all year. The DRAIN THE CLOCKs have been big, beautiful horses,” said Top Line Sales’ Jimbo Gladwell after her breeze.

Bred by Susan Anderson in Ohio, she is a half-sister to the stakes winning Windy Lu Who and the stakes placed duo of Angel’s Sassy and Maleah. In all, her winning dam Windsail has produced four winners from four to race overall. Each of her dams on the page have produced stakes winners with many of their daughters following suit. Her third dam is the dam of Grade 1 winner Things Change and the granddam of Grade 2 winner Hero of Order among the 10 stakes performers named on her page.

A $500,000 filly was the second most expensive DRAIN THE CLOCK filly in the sale when Lee Ackerley Racing and Gainesway purchased her.

She was one of the two :20.1 breezers for her sire as a Hoppel consignee, tying the OBS track record with that performance. Bred by Southern Comfort Farm, the filly out of Queen of Aces is a half-sister to two winners from two to race. That mare is a half-sister to the stakes placed Coexistence and King Cyrus among four winners.

They are just the latest successful runners in the family with stakes performers under three of the four dams on the page. That starts with multiple Grade 1 winning fourth dam Dispute, who is the matriarch of a family that is led by Grade 2 winner West Coast Belle and Grade 3 winner Plainswoman.

DRAIN THE CLOCK’s other :20.1 breezer sold for $350,000 to Bill Childs from Doble J Equine Sales.

The colt is a half-brother to one winner from one to race out of the Exhi mare Exsqueeze Me, who was placed on the track. Out of stakes placed Lucas Street, Exsqueeze Me is a half-sister to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Wavell Avenue. That Grade 1 winner has produced Grade 1 winner Grenadier Guards and Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Queen’s Walk among her runners. Another one of Exsqueeze Me’s half-sisters is the dam of the multiple stakes placed Oh Darlin.

DRAIN THE CLOCK’s juveniles also sold for $335,000, $250,000, $225,000, etc. with 14 of his 19 sold bringing six figures. His offerings sold for an average of $276,579 and median of $180,000 with only two RNAing.
