DRAIN THE CLOCK 2-Year-Olds Shine in OBS March Under Tack Show

It’s a big first juvenile sale of the year for DRAIN THE CLOCK on March 10-12 with 25 juveniles selling by the stallion including 2-year-olds who earned the bullet for both an eighth of a mile and a quarter mile during the Under Tack Sale.

“(His offspring) are the most consistent group of horses I think I’ve seen in a long time from a stallion,” Norton continued. “It’s not necessarily one thing but they’re pretty like he is, they look fast and I always thought the pinhookers would gravitate towards him because they are big and pretty,” said Gainesway’s Stallion Director Ryan Norton.

Hip 284 was the talk of the sale after the Hoppel-offered filly worked in :20.1 during the second day of the Under Tack Show to tie the track record.

“We knew she was fast. We let her run and found she was faster than most of them here. I have a lot of DRAIN THE CLOCKS right now … and to tell you the truth, I can’t think of one I don’t like,” said Hoppel LLC’s Jesse Hoppel.

The April-born filly bred by Southern Comfort Farm is a half-sister to two winners from two to race out of the Street Boss mare Queen of Aces. That mare is a half-sister to four winners, led by the stakes placed duo of Coexistence and King Cyrus. There are stakes performers under three of the four dams on the page with multiple Grade 1 winning fourth dam Dispute the matriarch of a family that is led by Grade 2 winner West Coast Belle and Grade 3 winner Plainswoman.

She was joined at the top of the quarter mile leaderboard by a DRAIN THE CLOCK son during the final day of the Under Tack Show when Hip 748 also stopped the clock in :20.1.

Consigned by Doble J Equine Sales, he is a half-brother to one winner from one to race out of the Exhi mare Exsqueeze Me. That mare is a half-sister to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Wavell Avenue, who has produced Grade 1 winner Grenadier Guards and Grade 2 winner and Grade 1-placed Queen’s Walk among her runners. Another one of Exsqueeze Me’s half-sisters is the dam of the multiple stakes placed Oh Darlin.

“I started hearing whispers even in October and you need to be cautiously optimistic or else you could look foolish. But given his pedigree and given his precociousness and speed, it’s something we thought was definitely possible,” Norton said. “Now, did I think it was going to be to this level of having multiple sub 10s and two tie the breeze up record at :20 1/5, no. But obviously, we’re very happy.”

A half-sister to three stakes performers bred by Susan Anderson in Ohio goes through the ring as Hip 508 after registering the fastest time on Friday with a :9.3 breeze.

The Top Line Sales offering is a half-sister to the stakes winning Windy Lu Who with both her stakes placed half-siblings winning multiple races as well. Out of the winning Windsail, this filly is a half-sister to four winners from four to race overall. She also sees Grade 1 winner Things Change and Grade 2 winner Hero of Order among the 10 stakes performers named on her page.

“We knew we had a shot at going fast today but you never think you’re going to go :9 3/5. Once the Golden Pal did it, we thought the DRAIN THE CLOCK might do it because she’s been right there head and head with him all year. The Drain the Clocks have been big, beautiful horses,” said Top Line Sales’ Jimbo Gladwell.

Breezing just a tick off the one-furlong bullet when stopping the clock in :9.4 is the New York-bred Hip 132.

Offered by de Meric Sales, the colt bred by Saratoga Glen Farm and Dean Purdom was purchased for $145,000 by his juvenile consignor from the Fasig-Tipton Preferred New York-Bred Yearling Sale. He is out of the Freud mare Making a Point, who has proven to be a productive broodmare as the dam of three winners from five to race led by five-time winner Moonachie.

This family boasts 15 stakes horses on the page with multiple having Grade 2 placings to their name.

Another DRAIN THE CLOCK stopped the clock in :9.4 during the final day of the Under Tack Show with J & R Thoroughbreds’ Hip 595 getting the job done.

The gray filly is a half-sister to one winner from one to race out of the Street Boss mare Bettyfromtheblock. Bettyfromtheblock is a half-sister to five winners out of Balboa Betty, whose daughters have produced Grade 3 winner Bettys Bambino and three other stakes performers.

Balboa Betty is also a full sister to Horse of the Year Tiznow, Grade 2 winners Budroyal and Tizdubai and others.

Hip 74 comes into the ring with an update after her dam’s half-sister saw stakes winning daughter Sea Dancer finishing third in the Wishing Well S. on February 6. That runner is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Johannes and stakes placed Sea Runner.

This My Little Stable Racing-offered filly is a half-sister to three winners from five to race out of a winning full sister to the Grade 2-placed Join in the Party.  Kiana’s Dream is also a half-sister to the aforementioned stakes placed dam of Grade 1 winner Johannes, the dam of Grade 2 winner Elm Drive, and the dam of two stakes performers as well.

Breezing in :10.0 is the SGV Thoroughbreds offered Hip 161 out of the Tale of the Cat mare Minstrel Show.

That mare is a proven producer with her 10 winners from 13 to race including the stakes winning Beliveau and multiple stakes placed Super Colerosa. A $125,000 yearling bred by Kimberly Chung, Pat Barrett, and Michael Tiller the yearling is also a grandson of the successful broodmare Proud Minstrel. She produced Grade 3 winner Bidding Proud and stakes placed Beautiful Moment. That daughter went on to produce three more stakes performers as well as a stakes producer.

The OBS March 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale takes place at 11am each day from March 10-12th.
