Determined Sail Leads Way for SEIZE THE GREY at Keeneland November

Mares carrying foals from the first crop of SEIZE THE GREY sold for up to $385,000 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale over the last week.

Machmer Hall purchased Bernardini mare Determined Sail for $385,000 from Scott Mallory during the second book. The stakes winner is carrying her first foal on a February 22 cover.

Determined Sail was a debut winner as a 2-year-old at Colonel Downs before placing third in the Kitten’s Joy S. two starts later with three top three finishes in eight starts overall. She joins Canadian champion Philip My Dear as stakes winners out of the stakes winning Involuntary.

Involuntary is out of an Invasor half-sister to multiple stakes winner and Grade 1-placed Sir Gerry and the stakes winning Ionic. There are four more stakes performers under the next dam, led by the stakes winning Minotaur.

Gainesway was the consignor of the $250,000 Casting Director purchased by Troy Bloodstock.

Part of the Bonne Chance Farm dispersal, Casting Director is already a proven producer from her five foals to race. Each of the Bernardini’s mares are winners with those runners led by stakes winner and Grade 3-placed My Buddy B, Grade 3 placed Movie Moxy, and stakes placed Nom de Plum. The mare also has a 2-year-old by Munnings, yearling by Liam’s Map, and weanling by Street Sense to come.

The mare comes from a strong family as a daughter of the Grade 1 winning Shadow Cast. That broodmare is the granddam of the multiple stakes placed Home Base and herself is one of three stakes performers out of Daily Special. Daily Special also produced stakes winner Overprepared, stakes placed Queen Marge, and the dam of stakes placed Setna The Wise.

Casting Director is a sixth-generation stakes producer with horses produced by the dams behind her including champion Legarto and Group 1 winner Kilts N Kapers.

SEIZE THE GREY is about to enter his second season at stud and stands for $25,000 in 2026.
