Subconscious gave TAPIT his newest stakes winner in the closing race of the Santa Anita Fall meet on Sunday when the 3-year-old gelding won the Twilight Derby (G2).
Looking for his third straight victory, the LNJ Foxwoods-owned runner sat just behind Grade 1 winner Rock Your World through the early part of the 1 1/8 mile turf race. As the field galloped toward the quarter pole, Juan Hernandez let Subconscious pick up the pace and he soon took.
In the stretch, he slowly pulled away from the field to by 1 ¼ lengths in the end to win his first graded stakes in his first ever stakes attempt.
A $380,000 weanling purchase by Solis and Litt for his racing owners, the Richard Mandella trainee has always been one the stable is excited about with Hernandez saying they had told him the gelding was set for a big race.
“When we kicked for home he just exploded and we just passed the horse in front of him and did not let him pass,” he said. “He wouldn’t get beat by the other horses. He’s improving a lot. Every race he’s getting better and better. Even the guys from Mandella’s barn they told me this horse was doing really good and it looks like he just wants to keep running more every race, hopefully he keeps it like that.”
Bred by Buscar Stables, Subconscious is out of the stakes-placed Sweet Dreams, who is one of two stakes performers for stakes winner and Grade 2-placed Cat Charmer alongside Grade 2 winner Strike Charmer. This is also the family of dual classic-placed Impeachment.
Champion Sprinter Dayjur and his influential Grade 1 winning sister and bluehen broodmare Maplejinsky are under Subconscious’s fourth dam.
