Classic winner Tapwrit, a son of three-time leading sire Tapit and Spinaway Stakes (G1) winner Appealing Zophie, will enter stud at Gainesway in 2019.
After selling for $1.2 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale, Tapwrit went on to win the one-mile Pulpit Stakes at 2 and set a new stakes record in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) en route to his classic victory in the Belmont Stakes (G1).
Tapwrit’s seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher noted the success of the Belmont Stakes as a sire-making race. “You could argue that of the three Triple Crown races, it’s the one that has produced the most horses that have gone on to be successful at stud.”
Recent horses to win or place in the Belmont Stakes include top sires A.P. Indy, Empire Maker, Medaglia d’Oro, and Curlin.
“When you get a colt like Tapwrit — by a world’s leading stallion in Tapit, great conformation, out of a Grade-1 winning mare, cost $1.2 million as a yearling — I think he represents everything that you’re looking for in a stallion prospect,” Pletcher said.
Tapwrit’s initial stud fee has been set at $12,500 LFSN. He is available for inspection at Gainesway from 1-2:30 p.m. daily.
