The season of MCKINZIE continued during the first two books of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale this week, led by a $1.2 million colt who topped the third session of the sale and was the highest priced yearling by a freshman in the first two books.
Bred by Grandview Equine and offered by Runnymede Farm, the colt purchased by Mayberry Farm is a half-brother to this year’s Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and Preakness Stakes (G1) and Haskell Stakes (G1) third Mage. The colt’s stakes winning dam Puca also produced stakes-placed Gunning and Dornoch from three of racing age.
The colt’s stakes-placed second dam Boat’s Ghost is also the dam of Grade 1 winner Finnegans Wake with each of the colt’s first three dams producing at least one stakes winner.
“He’s a very athletic colt and we would like to have a nice colt,” Dottie Ingordo said after signing the ticket. “And obviously, there’s a fabulous pedigree, and a young mare, so it has a lot of positives. And you always want one with a lot of presence, and he has that.”
A MCKINZIE filly out of Graeme Six consigned by Gainesway was sold to Greg Tramontin for $550,000 during the first day of selling.
The filly is a half-sister to the Grade 3 winners Cali Star and Delightful Joy in addition to stakes winner Seymourdini among the nine winners from 10 to race out of the Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Graeme Six. Delightful Joy is also the dam of Grade 2 winner Window Shopping.
The filly’s third dam is also the dam of the stakes winners Ruby Hill and Ruby Friday in addition to the stakes placed duo of Ruby’s Pro and Distinctive Ruby. Graeme Six is carrying a foal by MCKINZIE this year as well.
The third most expensive MCKINZIE offering was a $500,000 filly purchased by Eureka from the Blandford Stud consignment.
A $175,000 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale purchase by Creek Bloodstock from Bedouin Bloodstock, the SF Bloodstock-bred returned 10 months later to this sale. She is out of Lady Rapper, who has produced Grade 1 winner Princess Violet and stakes placed Baime among her four winners. Lady Rapper is out of the Grade 1-placed She’s Got The Beat, who herself is a half-sister to the dam of stakes placed Captain Von Trapp.
