Bernardini’s best son at stud
To Honor and Serve was precocious enough to be an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old honors, but he showed his true brilliance when taking the Cigar Mile (G1) at 3 and Woodward Stakes (G1) at 4. To Honor and Serve recorded ¾ Ragozin figures twice in his career, confirming his exceptional speed over 1 mile to 1⅛ miles.

A multiple graded stakes winner at 2, Grade 1-winning miler at 3, and Woodward Stakes (G1) winner at 4, To Honor and Serve is by Bernardini out of a multiple Grade 1-producing daughter of Deputy Minister.
One of the outstanding stallion sons of A.P. Indy, Bernardini has excelled over mares from the Mr. Prospector line. Most notable has been the cross with mares by Carson City (sire of City Zip), having produced five stakes winners including Grade 1 scorers A Z Warrior and Cavorting. He also has Grade 1 winner Dame Dorothy from a daughter of Woodman, and we can note success with mares from the Forty Niner branch, including Distorted Humor, Seeking the Gold, Smart Strike, and Kingmambo (whose son Lemon Drop Kid would give inbreeding to A.P. Indy and his three-quarter sister).
Bernardini is out of a mare by Fappiano son Quiet American, and when crossed back over Fappiano-line mares has a Grade 1 winner from a daughter of Cryptoclearance and a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song (by Unbridled, who might fit well here in general). Mares carrying Rubiano, War Front’s broodmare sire, might also work with To Honor and Serve.
Bernardini has enjoyed success with mares from several branches of the Northern Dancer line. Multiple Grade 1 winner Stay Thirsty is out of a mare by Storm Bird, and Bernardini sired graded winner Buffum out of a Storm Cat mare. He also has graded winners out of mares by Storm Cat sons Exploit, Forestry, and Tale of the Cat. Storm Bird son Summer Squall is a half-brother to A.P. Indy, and Bernardini has two graded stakes winners out of mares by that horse.
Out of mares from the Sadler’s Wells branch of Northern Dancer, Bernardini has a Grade 1 winner out of a mare by Medaglia d’Oro; a graded stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s sire, El Prado; and a stakes winner out of a daughter of Galileo. There is also a Grade 1 winner by Danehill, from the Danzig line, which might be interesting with To Honor and Serve through Exchange Rate and War Front. There are also Bernardini Grade 1 winners out of mares from the Lyphard and Nijinsky II branches.
It could be worth considering breeding To Honor and Serve back over his broodmare sire line – Deputy Minister – through such as Awesome Again, Graeme Hall, and Silver Deputy. Crossed with mares descending from Northern Dancer’s three-quarter relative Icecapade, Bernardini has graded winners from daughters of Caller I. D. (by Phone Trick) and Wild Again.
Bernardini has two graded stakes winners out of mares from the Blushing Groom line, including Fioretti out of a mare by Cherokee Run, the sire of Kafwain and Yonaguska, which suggests introducing Mt. Livermore (sire of Housebuster and Orientate) or Rahy.
